Historic naval hub since the 18th century, transitioning from Dutch East India Company to British Royal Navy to South African Navy (1957 Simonstown Agreement). Facilities: Selborne Graving Dock (commissioned 1910, handles large naval vessels), Syncrolift (60m x 15m), deep-water port access, extensive workshops, covered repair sheds. Services include vessel refitting, modernization, hull treatment, propulsion system overhauls, materials testing, corrosion surveys, non-destructive testing, condition monitoring, and engineering changes. Essential for sustainment of SA Navy frigate and submarine flotillas. Also accepts commercial and recreational vessels when capacity allows.
