Fire Breaks Out on Ferry GNV Phoenix in Naples Port

A fire broke out aboard the Italian-flagged ferry GNV Phoenix (IMO 9263655) in the port of Naples on the afternoon of its ongoing maintenance and interior renovation work, following the vessel's recent acquisition by the MSC group. According to maritime outlet shippingitaly.it, a distress signal was issued via radio shortly before 7 PM, prompting assistance from the Port Authority and emergency services. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, though it is believed to be located in the lower decks or engine room. Several tugboats responded first, followed by fire crews and a Coast Guard patrol boat, which carried out firefighting operations. No injuries were reported among crew members or external contractors working on board; the latter were evacuated in time, according to the ship's command. The port of Naples remained operational throughout the incident, though the Port Authority cordoned off the area around the vessel to allow rescue and firefighting teams to work. A visible column of smoke from the ferry, formerly named Athara, could be seen from multiple parts of the city. The GNV Phoenix had been scheduled to enter service in the coming weeks under the new name AF Phoenix, chartered to Ancona-based Adria Ferries for the regular route between Bari and Durres. The extent of damage from the fire and its impact on the vessel's entry into service have not yet been disclosed.
