Ship BYB Othello Runs Aground Near Bosphorus Strait

The vessel BYB Othello ran aground this morning near the Black Sea entrance of the Bosphorus Strait after suffering an engine failure amid stormy weather, according to maritime monitoring reports. The crew was safely evacuated following the incident. The grounding occurred as the ship attempted to navigate the northern approach to the strait, a critical waterway connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and, ultimately, the Mediterranean. Stormy conditions reportedly compounded the mechanical problem, leaving the vessel unable to maintain control before it ran aground. The Bosphorus is one of the world's busiest and narrowest international shipping lanes, regularly handling tanker and cargo traffic between Black Sea ports and global markets. Incidents involving engine failure or loss of propulsion in the strait pose heightened risks due to strong currents, heavy vessel density, and limited maneuvering space near its entrances. No further details have been released regarding the extent of damage to the BYB Othello, the cause of the engine failure, or whether the grounding has disrupted traffic through the strait. Authorities have not yet confirmed salvage or recovery plans for the vessel.
