Zim-Chartered Containership Sinks After Black Sea Drone Attack

Zim confirmed the loss of the Contship Jet, a Greek-owned containership operating under charter to the Israeli carrier, after it was struck by three sea drones and sank around midnight on 29 Oct 2026, roughly 12 hours after the attack. Bulgarian authorities reported the vessel went down about 17 nautical miles east of Varna, with no immediate signs of pollution detected by response teams sent to the site. All 18 crew members aboard the 18,000 DWT ship, which had capacity for up to 1,267 TEU, were rescued and taken to Bulgaria. The vessel was carrying 421 containers, including lithium-ion batteries, corrosive liquids, acids and other industrial components, with roughly 20 containers reported lost overboard during the attack. Zim, which described the ship as a small containership with a limited cargo load, said expected financial damage was minimal and that it was working with owner Contship Management to secure a replacement vessel and maintain service. The sinking marks at least the fifth attack on commercial shipping in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone in recent weeks. Bulgaria's outgoing Chief of Defense, Admiral Emil Eftimov, said a French patrol plane had detected the drones and issued a warning, but forces could not act because the drones remained outside territorial waters, with bad weather further hampering response. He said the Navy has handled more than 100 drone and debris reports since summer. Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey have jointly denounced the attacks and pledged coordinated security measures, while officials say the perpetrators remain unidentified.
