UK Maritime Authority Warns of Pirate Skiffs in Gulf of Aden

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has issued a warning alerting vessels to suspicious skiff activity in the Gulf of Aden, after several such boats were reported sighted in the area. The agency advised ships transiting the region to exercise increased vigilance and to report any suspicious approaches immediately. The Gulf of Aden remains a key chokepoint for commercial shipping linking the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to the wider Indian Ocean, making it a recurring focus of maritime security monitoring. UKMTO, which operates as a liaison between naval forces and merchant shipping in the region, regularly issues advisories on piracy, armed robbery and other security incidents affecting vessels transiting these waters. No details were provided on the number, location or behaviour of the skiffs beyond their presence being reported, nor were any incidents of boarding or attack confirmed at this stage. Shipping companies and masters operating in the Gulf of Aden have been urged to maintain heightened situational awareness, adhere to recommended transit corridors, and coordinate with naval and coalition forces active in the area. The warning adds to a long history of piracy concerns off the coast of Yemen and Somalia, where armed groups have periodically targeted merchant vessels. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as more information becomes available.
