Fire-Damaged Ferry Blue Carrier 2 Towed to Elefsina

A salvage vessel has begun towing the passenger ferry Blue Carrier 2 from waters off Tinos to the ONEX shipyards in Elefsina, following a large fire that destroyed most of the ship on 25 September 2026. The vessel Aegeon Pelagos, assisted by two tugboats, is leading the operation. Rescue officials said the fire has been fully extinguished and no new hotspots have been detected. The blaze caused extensive damage to the ferry's two upper decks and to the vehicles parked on them. The cause of the fire remains unknown, though it reportedly started in a truck located in garage number 4. The Blue Carrier 2 was sailing 4.5 nautical miles north of Mykonos when the fire broke out at 8.57 am. At the time, the ferry was carrying 166 trucks and 29 people, comprising 28 crew members and one truck driver. All on board abandoned the vessel safely and were transported to Tinos. The ferry will undergo further assessment and repair work at the Elefsina shipyards once it arrives. Authorities have not yet released additional details on the extent of the damage or a timeline for investigation into the fire's origin.
