At Least 20 Dead in Cargo Ship Fire at Qingdao Shipyard

At least 20 people have been killed after a cargo ship caught fire while undergoing repairs at a shipyard in Qingdao, eastern China, according to Chinese state media. A total of 42 people were reportedly aboard the vessel when the blaze broke out, and Xinhua said the fire had been extinguished by early afternoon. The vessel involved was identified as the Ocean Melody, a 20-year-old Liberia-flagged dry bulk carrier, according to ship-tracking data from LSEG. The ship is managed by Yuyangkunpeng Shanghai Shp Mgm, with Huili Shipping Co Ltd listed as its registered owner. LSEG data showed the vessel had arrived at the Qingdao shipyard on 31 August 2026 and had remained there since. The shipyard is operated by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), a state-owned firm that describes itself as China's principal naval shipbuilder and its largest builder of ships and offshore equipment. A 2022 recruitment notice from the CSSC unit said the yard had annual shipbuilding capacity of three million deadweight tons and could repair 212 vessels a year. Chinese President Xi Jinping called for intensified search and rescue operations, a swift investigation and accountability measures, Xinhua reported. The incident follows an explosion at a shipyard in Fujian province around a month earlier that killed a rescue worker and injured 12 others, part of a string of recent industrial and fire-related disasters across China that have prompted authorities to launch a wider safety campaign targeting high-risk sites.
