Salvage of Grounded MSC Baltic III Advances Off Newfoundland

Dismantling of the containership MSC Baltic III has progressed significantly, with the salvage team recently separating the bow from the remaining hull and pulling it onto the shoreline for cutting into smaller sections destined for recycling. The 207-metre vessel ran aground on the Newfoundland coast in February 2025 and is now being taken apart section by section. Around 5,700 tonnes of material has been removed from the ship, representing almost half of its total tonnage, up from approximately 4,200 tonnes just days earlier. Salvors have already stripped the vessel of its hatch covers, deck machinery, cranes and bridge structure, and are now progressively bringing the remaining hull ashore for further dismantling. The operation, which is taking place in a harsh and semi-remote coastal environment, is expected to continue into 2027 and will include shoreline restoration work once the wreck has been fully removed. The scale and complexity of the project underscore the demanding conditions salvage crews face when responding to groundings in exposed North Atlantic locations. The removal work has drawn attention within the maritime industry for the pace at which sections of the hull are being extracted and processed, as well as for the environmental remediation planned for the affected shoreline once the vessel has been fully dismantled.
