Fire Destroys Philippine Ferry, Killing Five, Dozens Missing

A fire aboard the passenger ferry June Aster off the coast of the Philippines has killed at least five people, with search and recovery efforts continuing for a significant number of missing passengers, the Philippine Coast Guard said. The ferry departed Manila on Wednesday bound for the port of Coron on Busuanga Island, just south of Mindoro, carrying an estimated 117 passengers and 17 crew members according to early manifest information. At about 1845 hours that evening, the vessel caught fire roughly one nautical mile off the town of Marcilla, on the eastern side of Busuanga. Multiple Philippine Coast Guard units and other government agencies responded to the scene, assisted by commercial vessels operating out of Coron. Video released by the Coast Guard showed the fire burning intensely across the ship by the time first responders arrived, with sections of the hull visibly glowing red-hot from the heat of the blaze. Five bodies have been recovered and 42 people rescued so far. Authorities are still working to confirm the total number of people unaccounted for, though officials indicated the figure could be substantial based on the initial passenger and crew count. Search operations continued overnight, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
