Fire Breaks Out Aboard Norwegian Aura During Construction

A fire broke out aboard Norwegian Cruise Line's future flagship Norwegian Aura on the morning of 28 Aug 2026 while the 170,000-gross-ton ship was undergoing construction work at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard in Italy. A container holding waste and construction debris reportedly caught fire, producing a substantial cloud of black smoke visible rising from the vessel. Fincantieri's shipyard emergency team responded and contained the blaze without assistance from the local fire department, according to reports. No injuries or significant damage were reported. Footage published by Italian outlet Il Piccolo showed black smoke rising from the ship, with nearby workers wearing face masks. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed, and Fincantieri has not issued a public statement or confirmed whether an investigation is underway. The incident occurred during the fitting-out stage of construction, after the ship was floated out at Monfalcone on 16 Apr 2026. There has been no confirmed change to Norwegian Aura's construction timetable, with the Prima Plus-class vessel still scheduled to enter service in May 2027. Measuring approximately 1,130 feet in length and accommodating 3,879 guests across 1,976 staterooms, it will be Norwegian Cruise Line's largest ship, roughly 10% bigger than Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna. The maiden voyage remains scheduled to depart Trieste on 21 May 2027, disembarking in Tarragona, Spain, before the ship crosses the Atlantic to begin year-round Caribbean sailings from Miami in June 2027. Norwegian Cruise Line has another Prima Plus-class ship on order from Fincantieri for 2028, alongside five new-class vessels scheduled between 2030 and 2037.
