Bulk Carrier Moved After Crashing Into Durban Quay

The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has confirmed that a bulk carrier collided with a quay at the Port of Durban on Monday night, with the vessel subsequently relocated to an alternative berth to allow for inspections. The collision occurred at around 21:30 and was captured on video, showing the vessel moving towards the quay before striking port infrastructure in a violent impact. TNPA said emergency response and operational teams were deployed immediately, and that no injuries have been reported so far. Photographs taken after the incident show significant visible damage to the vessel, though the full extent of damage to the ship and quay infrastructure has not yet been confirmed. The vessel has been identified as HAWK S, a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier measuring approximately 180 metres long and 30 metres wide. Vessel-tracking data shows the ship arrived in Durban on 31 Aug 2026. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. TNPA said it is working with relevant regulatory authorities and stakeholders to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that the safety of port users, employees, contractors and infrastructure remains its highest priority.
