Norway Seizes Russian Vessel Over Naftogaz Arbitration Award

Norwegian authorities have seized the Russian research vessel Professor Molchanov (IMO: 8010348) at the port of Barentsburg on Svalbard, at the request of Ukraine's state energy company Naftogaz. A Norwegian court ordered the arrest on 31 Aug 2026, citing Russia's failure to pay $4.22 billion owed to Naftogaz under an April 2023 ruling by an international arbitration tribunal in The Hague. Svalbard authorities confirmed the detention to Norwegian outlet Aftenposten. Naftogaz head Serhiy Fedorenko described the seizure as a step toward restoring justice over Russia's seizure of Naftogaz assets in Crimea, saying the company will continue pursuing Russian assets worldwide until compensation is paid. Russia's minister for the development of the Far East and Arctic, Alexei Chekunkov, said the trust Arktikugol, which has operated on Svalbard since 1931, would challenge the arrest through legal channels, calling the move an example of Western "legal nihilism." Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, quoted by state news agency TASS, called Norway's action "piracy," comparing it to a relic of the Middle Ages. The Professor Molchanov belongs to the fleet of Rosgidromet, Russia's federal weather and environmental monitoring agency. The vessel is used for scientific research, environmental monitoring, and logistical support for polar stations, as well as for commercial cruises and expeditions.
