Passenger Ferry IRINI K Sinks off Sifnos

On September 2 the passenger ferry IRINI K sank about one nautical mile east of Sifnos, Greece, while under tow to the Perama shipyards. The vessel began taking on water in its engine room and sank within minutes. Two people aboard were safely rescued by the towing tug. Coast Guard and anti-pollution vessels were deployed, with no pollution reported. The shipowner said the ferry was carrying no fuel or lubricants.
