Four Dead After Tug, Boat Collide on Monongahela River

Four people were killed and one other was injured after a pusher tug and a recreational vessel collided on the Monongahela River in southwestern Pennsylvania on 30 Aug 2026. The collision occurred at around 21:00 local time when the tug, which was handling empty barges, struck the 24-foot (7.3-metre) recreational boat, causing it to capsize. The recreational vessel had five people on board at the time. The tug's crew pulled a man and a woman from the water immediately after the collision, but the woman later died while receiving treatment at a hospital in West Virginia on 31 Aug 2026. The rescued man remains hospitalised and is reported to be in critical condition. The bodies of three other victims were recovered from the river during a search and rescue operation that continued into 02 Sep 2026. A witness to the collision told local news outlet KDKA that both vessels appeared to be operating without lights at the time of the incident. The US Coast Guard and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission were among the agencies involved in the search and rescue effort. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
