Sinokor VLCC Abandoned After Rocket Strikes in Hormuz

The crew of the VLCC Senegal Prosperity has been evacuated after the tanker was struck by rockets and left abandoned and listing in the Strait of Hormuz. The Liberian-registered, 320,780 dwt vessel, operated by Sinokor Maritime, was hit three times on its port side, engine room and ballast tank while transiting the strait. According to the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC), the tanker was southbound exiting the strait toward the Gulf of Oman, roughly 4 nautical miles off the Omani coast, when the attack occurred at 22:00 UTC on 30 Aug 2026. The vessel's Company Security Officer reported that all communications were lost following the strikes and that the ship was dead in the water and listing to port. The Senegal Prosperity subsequently dropped anchor near position 2619N 05633E, and its crew was evacuated by local authorities. No casualties were reported. The tanker's last AIS position was recorded on 28 Aug 2026, in laden condition off the Ju Aymah Oil Terminal in Saudi Arabia, according to Pole Star Global data. The incident followed a separate round of US military action on 1 Sep 2026, when US forces struck Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets near the strait, including air defense sites, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities. US Central Command said the strikes responded to recent IRGC attempts to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and American service members.
