Somali Pirates Seize Tanker with German Crew

Somali pirates have hijacked the chemical and oil tanker MT Asana, which has a crew of 20 including eight Germans, according to reports from the semi-autonomous Puntland region in Somalia. The tanker, flying the Tanzanian flag, was en route from Karachi, Pakistan, to Bosaso, Somalia, when it was boarded by armed men in the Gulf of Aden and taken into Somali waters. The MT Asana's crew also includes ten Filipinos and two sailors of unspecified nationality. Local sources observed pirates delivering supplies to the vessel, suggesting preparations for a prolonged hostage situation. Puntland, while self-governed since 1998 with its own government and military, is internationally recognized as part of Somalia. Piracy off Somalia's coast was a significant threat between 2008 and 2018, with numerous ship hijackings and ransom demands. International naval operations had reduced these incidents, but attacks have been increasing again since late 2023. This latest hijacking represents one of the most serious piracy cases involving German nationals in recent years.
