Chemical Leak on MSC Container Ship Injures Dozens at Port of Antwerp

A hydrogen fluoride leak aboard the MSC Mia Summer II at Deurganck Dock, Port of Antwerp, on 14 July triggered a major emergency response after the toxic chemical escaped from a damaged container during loading operations. A total of 127 people, including crew members and dock workers, were taken to nearby hospitals following possible exposure to the fumes. Of them, 28 remained under observation, with one person admitted to intensive care. Authorities established a safety zone around the terminal, temporarily halted shipping traffic in the area, and launched an investigation into the cause of the leak. The situation was later brought under control, with no risk reported to nearby residents.
