Scrap-laden Bulk Carrier Fire Contained at Port of Gdansk

A fire that broke out aboard the Panama-flagged bulk carrier Sion Star while the vessel was berthed at the Port of Gdansk, Poland, on 2 July was contained the following day after a major firefighting operation. The blaze erupted in a cargo hold loaded with scrap metal. The crew's initial efforts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, prompting the deployment of 25 fire engines, around 100 firefighters and firefighting tugs. Firefighters also used grapples to remove burning scrap metal from the hold. The fire was brought under control at around 11:50 a.m. on 3 July. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
