PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) is one of the four public shipyards operated by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). It is located in Kittery, Maine, and has a long and storied history dating back to the 18th century. PNSY was established in 1800 as the first federal shipyard in the United States. It was originally called the Portsmouth Navy Yard and was used to build and repair ships for the US Navy during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. In 1827, the shipyard was renamed the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Throughout the 19th and 20th century, PNSY played a crucial role in supporting the US Navy's operations. The shipyard built and repaired ships for both World War I and World War II, and during the Cold War it was a key facility for maintaining and upgrading the Navy's fleet of submarines. Today, PNSY continues to be an important asset for the US Navy. The shipyard provides a wide range of services, including maintenance, modernization, and repair of submarines, as well as other ships and support systems. It is one of the Navy's two major submarine maintenance and overhaul facilities in the US. PNSY employs thousands of people and is a major economic engine for the region.
