Wuhan Innovation Jianghai Transportation has placed an order for 16 methanol-powered river-sea dry bulk carriers with Jiangsu Qinfeng Shipbuilding, marking a significant advancement in the adoption of eco-friendly shipping technologies. The order includes two vessel types, one with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 15,000 and the other with 19,600 dwt. These vessels will be the first in China to operate solely on methanol fuel.

The order follows a prior agreement reached in August this year, when Wuhan Innovation signed a sales contract with the Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute for CS21M methanol engines. The vessels will utilize two variations of this engine, which are designed as single-fuel medium-speed models specifically optimized for methanol use.

The CS21M methanol engines, equipped with advanced direct injection technology, offer power capacities ranging from 1MW to 2MW. These engines are capable of achieving a 60% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions and a 99% reduction in sulfur oxide emissions, underscoring the environmental benefits of methanol as an alternative fuel source. The initiative represents a major step for China’s maritime industry toward reducing emissions and embracing sustainable technologies, positioning Wuhan Innovation as a pioneer in green shipping practices.
