Philly Shipyard has commenced production on a new fleet of Aloha Class containerships for Matson, Inc., marking a significant milestone in advancing sustainable maritime operations. The official start of production was celebrated with a steel-cutting ceremony. The fleet will consist of three state-of-the-art containerships designed to support Matson’s Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express (CLX) services. These vessels will be built to operate on either conventional marine fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG) and will be delivered to Matson in 2026 and 2027. All ships will be delivered in an LNG-ready configuration, aligning with Matson’s long-term sustainability goals.

The incorporation of LNG and other green ship technologies is aimed at supporting Matson’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with a targeted reduction by 2030. Philly Shipyard has expressed pride in its role in contributing to this initiative, reinforcing the partnership’s shared vision of sustainable shipping solutions. The new vessels are expected to enhance Matson’s service capacity and speed, benefiting both its Hawaii service and the CLX routes.
